Parson takes 3rd at U.P. mat tourney

IRON RIVER—Shae Parson earned third place in his weight class during the U.P. Championship wrestling tournament held Jan. 23 in Marquette.
    Wrestling in the 160-pound weight class, Parson went 3-1 at the tourney. After a first round bye, he defeated Marquette’s Nate Ball by a 5-2 decision.
    Gladstone’s Austin Demeuse defeated Parson by a major decision (17-4) in the semifinals, but Parson came back with a third period fall over Lukas Rittenger of Munising to win the third place match.
    Two other members of West Iron’s team also took part. Jeremy Rozine went 2-2 for the day, including a first round bye at 119 pounds. Munising’s Nick Miles beat him on a first period pin.
    In the consolation bracket, Rozine won on a 19-second pin over Ishpeming’s Kelsey Routhier, but he lost the consolation semis to Kingsford’s Ethan Wilcox on a first period pin.
    Kameron Fritsche, at 112, won a first round bye but lost a first period pin to Gladstone’s Nick Dawson and a consolation match by an 11-4 score to St. Ignace’s Halley Halberg.
