Late rally helps FP girls steal win

CRYSTAL FALLS—Like a sudden warm spell in the middle of January, Forest Park’s girls got hot at the perfect time in their Jan. 9 game against Mid Peninsula, rescuing a victory in a game they had not led since the early minutes.
After struggling on offense all night, the Lady Trojans suddenly made six straight shots from the floor during a 14-6 blitz that rescued a 35-34 win.
“I was happy that, at the end of the game, we didn’t lose our cool when they got close,” noted FP coach Jackie Giuliani.
On Jan. 12, the Lady Trojans lost 59-45 at Stephenson. The team enters this week with a 3-6 overall record, 3-4 in the Skyline Central Conference.
While Forest Park trailed Mid Pen nearly all game, it was never by more than five. Its big push started with the Wolverines in front 25-21 and 5:42 left.
Maddie Scarlassara ignited the rally with layup off Taylor Honkala’s steal and pass. Hannah Cross connected on a three, and Honkala drove the left side for two. Mid Pen kept pace, though, hitting three straight shots of its own, and still led 31-28.
“They kept hitting shots to stay in the game,” Giuliani said. “Just when I thought we were going to be able to put them away, they would hit one.”
