Lady Trojans sweep 3-game week

Forest Park’s Kelsi Hendrickson is best known for her defense and playmaking skills, but she also nailed a trio of 3-pointers during last week’s game at Superior Central.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Think last week was busy for you? Forest Park’s girls team played three games in four nights (two on the road) and won all three.
    The Lady Trojans overcame a three-point second quarter to earn a 48-41 win over Iron Mountain at home Jan. 26. Next, they won a make-up game Jan. 28 at Superior Central 52-25 and ended with a 61-24 victory at Florence on Jan. 29.    
    FP enters this week at 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the Skyline Central Conference.
    By far, the week’s biggest challenge came from the Mountaineers. Three-pointers by Adel Isaacson, Abby Nylund and Sierra Robarge boosted FP to a 17-13 lead after one.
    Kelsi Hendrickson hit a three midway through the second quarter—but those were FP’s only points all quarter, as IM took a 23-20 halftime lead. “We struggled with their 3-2 zone,” FP coach Jackie Giuliani said. “We hadn’t seen one this year.”
    Before long, though, the Lady Trojans started noticing gaps in IM’s defense. “Once they saw the holes, they were able to find openings. I’m happy with how we adjusted.”
    Defense played a big role, too. Forest Park held IM to a single basket for the first six minutes of the second half, and Isaacson’s 3-pointer finally put FP back in front 28-25. That was part of a 16-7 burst that built a 41-32 lead. Isaacson, Robarge and Maria Stankewicz got the points, with assists from Libby Shamion and Susie Toivonen.
