Forest Park’s Mercedes Simmons (11) splits the West Iron defense on her way to 24 points as the Lady Trojans ended a five-game losing streak to the Wykons with a 40-34 win on Feb. 13 at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
CRYSTAL FALLS—As their regular season edged closer and closer to its conclusion, the Forest Park Lady Trojans found themselves at a critical juncture. Having lost four straight games and six of their last seven heading into last week, the Lady Trojans needed to pull together and build some confidence before the district tournament begins the first week of March.
On the docket were two home games – the first against Munising on Feb. 11 and the second against West Iron County on Feb. 13. After all was said and done, Forest Park had indeed made its stand with spirit, determination and togetherness. The Lady Trojans dispatched with the Mustangs 56-32 before stopping a five-game losing streak to the Wykons by knocking off their rivals 40-34.
The victory over WIC, especially, was a cause for celebration among the players and their coach.
“It’s very exciting,” said FP senior Mercedes Simmons, who dominated the game against the Wykons with 24 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots. “We knew we wanted this. We know they’re a rival, obviously, and we haven’t beaten them since a long time ago, so to beat them was awesome, especially since this was (the seniors) last rivalry game with them.”
