Girls 4th, boys 5th Trojans track season opens

CRYSTAL FALLS—Forest Park’s girls finished fourth and the boys took fifth in nine-team Nordic Booster Club Invitational track meet, held at North Dickinson on May 1.
    It was the first meet of the season after an extended siege of winter weather during April.
    The Trojan girls had one individual event winner: Taylor Clark, who won the 3200 meter run in 13 minutes, 29.62 seconds. She also was second in the 1600, finishing in 6:23.20.
    Forest Park’s 3200-meter relay team also placed first, finishing in 11:51.72. Runners were Clark, Amaya Johnson, Cassie Divine and Kristen Stacy.
    The Lady Trojans got two more second places, earned by Mercedes Simmons (300 low hurdles, 56.49) and Stacy (800; 2:54.02).
    Thirds went to Simmons in the 100 high hurdles (20.11) and Maddie Scarlassara in pole vault (6 feet, 6 inches). Scarlassara was also sixth in long jump.
    The FP girls’ other points came from the 1600 relay team (fourth; Hannah Cross, Scarlassara, Simmons and Elle Soderberg) and the 800 relay (sixth; Emme Emmers, Megan Bucek, Soderberg and Cross).
    The Lady Trojans finished with 62 points, in fourth place. Stephenson won the team title with 121 points, followed by North Dickinson (105) and Northwood Storm (94).
    The boys team was led by Mason Rintala, who finished second in two events: the 1600 (5:16.52, less than a second out of first) and the 3200 (11:57.67, 16 seconds back).
    Tyler Peltoma also earned second place in discus with a throw of 112-8. Robert Ponchaud was third in shot put with 35-10, and Connor Bortolini was third in pole vault, clearing 9-6. Other points came from Max Nylund (fifth in long jump), James Davis (sixth in the 800), Peter Ropiak (sixth in the 200) and Jacob Frisanco (sixth in discus).
    A pair of Trojan relay teams finished fifth: the 800 team (Nylund, C.J. Post, Bortolini and Ropiak) and the 400 team (Jacob Peterson, Post, Bortolini and Ropiak).
    The Trojans finished in fifth place with 47 points. Norway won team honors with 122, followed by North Central (112) and Northwood Storm (79.5).
    ● The Trojans were scheduled to run at the Norway Invitational on May 7, and they head for the Rapid River Invite on May 10. On May 15, it’s the Kingsford Invitational—the last tune-up before the Division 3 regional tournament at North Dickinson on May 18.
