FP, WIC finish week at invite
CRYSTAL FALLS/IRON RIVER—Both the Forest Park and West Iron volleyball teams played one dual meet and then participated in an invitational, hosted by the Lady Trojans, last week.
Forest Park went 4-4 at the invitational on Sept. 21 and lost its dual match at North Dickinson on Sept. 17.
In the invitational, the Lady Trojans began the day falling to Carney-Nadeau 21-10, 21-14 before splitting with L’Anse 21-18, 21-23. Forest Park then swept Munising 21-16, 21-10 and close the day with a 21-13, 24-25 stalemate against Iron Mountain.
No individual stats were available.
Forest Park’s other action during the week came at Felch, where North Dickinson registered a 25-20, 25-22, 25-12 Skyline Central Conference victory over the Lady Trojans.
The Nordics took a lead in each set before FP fought back but fell short.
“North Dickinson did a good job covering the floor and they were aggressive at the net,” interim coach Kim Bjork said. “When we thought we were climbing back, ND made some big players. We are just not quite at their level yet.”
Mercedes Simmons led the FP offense with eight kills and added five solo blocks. Kelsey Ragio recorded three kills, while Elaina Perry and Sydney Honkala had two each.
Honkala dished out eight assists, while Perry and Caitlyn Bloomburg fired two aces each.
“There is potential with this group of girls,” Bjork said. “Passing was one of our biggest downfalls, so that is something we will really focus on (the rest of the week).”
The FP junior varsity squad defeated North Dickinson two sets to none.
Meanwhile, West Iron began its week with a road victory over Westwood on Sept. 19. West Iron (2-2 duals) came out strong, jumping to a 10-point lead in the first set before fending off the Patriots (0-5) 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 25-16 in Ishpeming.
