FP releases football info
CRYSTAL FALLS—Forest Park has released information regarding the beginning of the 2019 football season.
Forest Park junior varsity and varsity 8-man football programs start practice on Monday, Aug. 12 at 4 p.m. Presently, Forest Park has a nine-game varsity schedule with the first game at Pickford on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. CST. Coaches are optimistic that enough student athletes are interested that a JV schedule will be reinstated this year after many years where only one varsity team existed. This decision will be made after the first week of practice, based on the number of athletes who show up for practice. All those athletes interested in football are encouraged to show up.
Forest Park will once again offer an 8-man tackle football program for its seventh- and eighth-grade students. The first official day of football practice begins Monday Aug. 26. Practice times will typically be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There will be no practice on Fridays, or on Labor Day Monday, Sept 2. Tentatively, Forest Park has a five-game schedule with games on Tuesday nights. The first game is scheduled for Sept. 17 against Escanaba Holy Name at 5:30 p.m. at Forest Park.
A physical is mandatory prior to participation. As part of the physical requirement, each student athlete must have concussion baseline testing. Make sure this is completed before the first day of practice.
Forest Park is also encouraging all fifth- and sixth-grade students, including those outside of the school district, to join a flag football program to be run at Forest Park for four weeks during the month of September. Sessions will run from 5:30-7 p.m. twice a week, typically on Mondays (except Tuesday after Labor Day) and Thursdays. Coaches will include the existing Forest Park varsity, seventh- and eighth-grade staff, and upperclassmen and approved parents.
Fundamentals will be taught every session with flag/touch games to follow. No physicals are required and there is no participation fee. All boys and girls are welcome. No helmets will be worn, and there will be no tackling. Those interested can make as many sessions as they would like. Tennis shoes will be adequate, but cleats can be worn. The first session at the Forest Park football field will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
