FP preps for new season

Forest Park players appear to be in near-perfect sync as they “hit and roll” the tackling sled during their first week of practice. The Trojans take part in a five-team scrimmage at Dick Mettlach Field Friday morning, Aug. 17. The season opener is Aug. 24 at Superior Central.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Football traditionalists may not like it, but eight-man football is here to stay at Forest Park. A symbolic act recently underlined that point: The seven-man blocking sled was cut down to five positions. Teams can only use five linemen in eight-man.
A big, change, but the Trojans caught on quickly. Last year, they won the state eight-man Division 2 championship with a 54-12 win over Portland St. Patrick, wrapping up a 10-2 season.
Earlier in the postseason the Trojans traveled to the eastern U.P. for the state semifinals, where they edged previously unbeaten Pickford 36-34 on a snowy field. To get a chance at Pickford, the Trojans defeated North Central and Engadine in regional games.
The by-now-familiar manpower shortage was evident during last Friday’s practice—the first one with full pads. Only 11 players were suited up.
