FP girls extend winning streak
CRYSTAL FALLS—Two weeks ago, the Forest Park volleyball team was in the midst of a three-match losing streak and appeared to be spiraling.
But volleyball seasons, much like the matches themselves, can be a rollercoaster, and the Lady Trojans have answered that dip with four-match winning uptick, including a pair of wins last week.
After edging Mid-Peninsula in a five-setter on the road on Oct. 9, Forest Park came back home and defeated Rapid River 25-18, 14-25, 25-21, 25-21 at Eddie Chambers Gym on Oct. 12.
FP coach Ana Cornelia and standout middle hitter Mer-
cedes Simmons said the team has improved significantly recently.
“We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season,” said Simmons who led the FP attack in the win over the Rockets with 19 kills. “We’ve really gotten our timing down on hitting, and passing, we’ve really worked that a lot.”
“Other than our service errors, we’re getting there and starting to come together every practice, every game,” Cornelia said. “Just the sense of urgency in the back row and the aggressiveness at the net is awesome. They’re starting to swing at everything and the killer instinct is coming out.”
