FP boys win 3rd straight D127 title

WAKEFIELD—Forest Park’s boys team won its third straight District 127 title here last week, using its high-octane offense to leave the other teams far behind at Wakefield-Marenisco High School.
    The Trojans defeated the host Cardinals in a semifinal game 68-34 on March 11 and returned to take on and take down Bessemer 75-42 in the district title game March 13.
    Coach Chris Nocerini had a big smile after the awards ceremony. “Focused,” he said. “Very focused group of young men tonight. Very proud of the effort all around.”
    The win means FP heads to the Class D regional tournament for the third straight year and potentially their third straight battle for the regional title with North Central, which enjoys a perfect record over the Trojans in the last few years.
    This year’s regionals are in Negaunee, and the field is stacked. In the first semifinal March 16, FP (now 18-4) faced Lake Linden-Hubbell (22-0). In the other semi, Munising (20-1) battled North Central (22-0). The regional title game is March 18.
    Wakefield-Marenisco won its first-round game over Watersmeet, but the Trojans struck the Cardinals’ 2-3 zone hard early in the semifinal game, racing away to a 22-8 first quarter lead.
    “They moved the ball very nice,” Nocerini said later. “They took their time. They just simply went where they weren’t—that’s what you try to do against the 2-3.”
    Austin Carlson and Daniel Nocerini led the early scoring—Carlson scored 12 first quarter points on close-in shots off assists from Nocerini and Lee Graff. Nocerini added six more on his own. “Daniel and Austin took control inside the paint,” said the coach. “We’re been trying to get Dan in the
