Carlson honored as player of week
IRON COUNTY--Three former Iron County prep basketball players are making big contributions for their collegiate teams.
Former Forest Park Trojan Austin Carlson was named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week on Jan. 29. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound senior at Finlandia University put together a huge week, averaging 20.7 points, 12 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game while shooting 65 percent from the field (26 of 40).
He capped his memorable week by scoring 33 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking four shots against Siena Heights.
Carlson also moved into fourth place on the career blocked shot list at Division 3 Finlandia and is the 11th Lion to record 400 career rebounds.
--Former Forest Park Lady Trojan guard Abby Nylund has started all 20 games for Division 3 Lakeland University (Plymouth, Wis.). Nylund is averaging 4.2 points and 2.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
She has also recorded 15 steals and seven blocked shots for the Muskies, who are 16-4.
--Former West Iron County Wykon Steven Nelson is a center at Gogebic Community College. He has started 18 of the 19 games and is averaging 22 minutes per game. The 6-foot-8 freshman is averaging 7.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game. He has hit 50 percent (49 of 98) from inside the 3-point arc and has connected on 69 percent (36 of 52) from the foul line for the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 2 Samsons.
