Bjork takes over FP girls basketball squad

CRYSTAL FALLS — Kim Bjork is no stranger to Forest Park athletics. She was a standout basketball and volleyball player for the Lady Trojans from 1998-2001, was a mainstay as a coach of the Forest Park varsity volleyball program for years and also has coached junior varsity and junior high basketball teams in recent seasons.
But Bjork’s position in the Lady Trojans’ basketball program has been elevated this year as she takes over the reins of the varsity girls basketball team from Jackie Giuliani, who moved on to become the Forest Park School District’s K-12 principal.
“Oh, I’m very excited,” said Bjork, who was a two-time Class D all-U.P. hoops player in high school. “As a high schooler, (basketball) was probably my favorite sport. I love the sport, and I loved volleyball, too. It’s just something that I guess is in your blood. You like that environment.”
While this will be Bjork’s first shot at being a varsity basketball coach, she was a long-time and highly successful varsity volleyball coach until 2016. She also coached the junior varsity basketball team for the past four years and was an assistant for Giuliani for the varsity squad.
Bjork said the experience of working with Giuliani has prepared her for some of her new tasks.
“(Jackie) made me feel like a part of the varsity and really guided me along as a coach,” Bjork said. “We sat down many nights looking at film together and trying to figure things out in the initial part of our coaching career together. We had some good tournament runs so we really did a lot of film study together, so I’m not concerned about that.”
Bjork added that she knows the level of pressure and attention will increase as she steps up from the JV to the varsity but she has had experience with that during her volleyball coaching career.
