IRON RIVER—A week before Halloween, at around 8:30 on the windswept eve of Oct. 24, an eerie feeling permeated Nelson Field, with strange sights from one end of the grounds to the other.
On one side, a group of visiting players whooped and hollered and ran joyously to greet their fans in triumph.
On the other side, the West Iron County players gathered for their postgame huddle, many with tears in their eyes, as parents and fellow students gazed on with perplexed looks on their faces.
And it’s no wonder. The Wykons hadn’t lost a regular-season game in two years, after all. But that 19-game streak is history after Bark River-Harris shocked Division 7 fourth-ranked West Iron 8-6 in the regular season finale.
The Wykons’ last regular-season defeat came on Oct. 5, 2012, and the realization that their school-record streak was over was difficult for players and coaches to absorb.
