IRON COUNTY - 4-H, an organization which promotes the positive development of youth, originated in the early 1900’s as a way to educate and motivate young people to develop their skills and stay involved in their communities. The 4-H’s, head-heart-hands-health, are the focus of the organization and all activities are designed to promote and facilitate learning. There are presently over 6 million members nationally. Two area clubs, the Artemis Archers and the Sharpshooters, are active and recently participated in a competition which pitted them against other 4-H clubs in BB gun and archery.

On June 11, Iron County’s two 4-H Clubs, the Artemis Archers and the Sharpshooters participated in the Upper Peninsula Regional Competition in Escanaba. The competition was organized by the Delta County Michigan State University Extension Office and offered levels of competition (beginner, junior and senior) and a team competition in both archery and BB gun. Clubs from Delta, Luce and Iron counties competed.

When the competition scores were tallied, Iron County took home 20 medals. Those earning individual medals for BB Gun included Addison Brozonowski, Daniel Maki, Isabella Martin, Harmony Scott and Brennon Gursky. Team BB gun medals were awarded to Isabella Martin, Brennon GursKy,  Harmony Scott, Addison Brozonowski and Daniel Maki.

Individuals earning medals for archery included Addison Brozonowski, Harmony Scott, Emma Goldbach, Ianna Dunlap and Artemis Archer Brennon Gursky. The archery team division was dominated by the Iron County Artemis Archers who took home first place, followed by a third place team win from a mixed county team that included Addison Brozonowski.

The Iron County Artemis Archers are coached by Barbara Luck along with volunteer Ericka Gursky. Club reporter Elizabeth Gursky works to keep the area informed of 4-H activities. The Iron County Sharpshooters are led by Douglas Weesner and Greg Scott.
