WU youth hunters harvest whitetails
Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County sponsored another successful hunting program in conjunction with the Michigan Youth Hunt Weekend, Sept. 16-17. Youth hunted on WU food plots throughout the county with hunting mentors. Sixteen youth hunters participated with 13 deer harvested. Six bucks and seven does were taken. Each of the deer were processed through WU at Sommers Sausage Shop in Crystal Falls. WU donated the deer heads to the local DNR for Chronic Wasting Disease study purposes. Rachel Gill, 14, harvested her first buck while hunting with her grandpa, WU member Larry Pifke, using her grandmother Shirley’s Winchester .243 rifle. This was her first year hunting and she took the spikehorn at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17.
