Tip-Up-Town features snow drag races
Matt LaCosse of Champion, right, took first place in the Top Gun feature at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Snow Drags as he raced against winner of the U.P. Championship Snow Drags in Ontonagon, Jerry Buschell. LaCosse also won the Pro Open Mod Class, Race Stock 800 and Pro Mod 600.
CHANNING—Champion is more than just where Matt LaCosse calls home, it is a title he has had at many snowmobile drag races over the year. On Saturday at Tip-Up-Town in Channing, he put another trophy on the mantel for a Top Gun win at the Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS) Racing Circuit Snow Drags. The event was sponsored by the Sagola Township Sportsman Club and was held on Eddy Lake by the clubhouse.
Top Gun is the feature class in the MASTERS Racing Circuit. This is the class in which the top professional snowmobile drag racers compete. It is the class that the snowmobiles hit speeds over 100 mph on a 500-foot groomed track.
It was in the Top Gun feature that LaCosse edged out the winner of the U.P. Championship Snow Drags in Ontonagon, Jerry Buschell. Advancing to the finals as the class’s top seed was John Mihelich. Both Buschell and Mihelich are from the Keweenaw Peninsula.
The specially-built sled also powered LaCosse to a first-place finish in the Pro Open Mod Class.
“Keith (Phelps) and Greg (Brownson) built me a very fast sled. Biggest concern I had was hooking up at the start,” commented LaCosse.
LaCosse also won the Race Stock 800 and Pro Mod 600.
That’s four class champions from Champion.
LaCosse missed out taking home cross Nationals and the National Snow Drags at Mont du Lac.
