On Nov. 30, Jesse Holmes (left) and Kyle Christensen traveled 500 miles to Iron River to participate in a mentorship program sponsored by Shamco Inc. The mentorship is part of the students’ 2021 senior project that focuses on timber processing and its benefits. Both students are seniors in the Mattawan Public Schools located in southwest Michigan. Eric Shamion, co-owner of Shamco, spent the day teaching the boys about responsible forestry practices and the logistics involved in the purchase, processing and final shipment of the product. Both students witnessed the loading and unloading of the logging trucks and Shamco’s Ponsse Scorpion King harvester at work in the Golden Lake area. Kyle Christensen is the grandson of Charles and Kay Christensen of Iron River. (submitted photo)
