IC Sheriff issues ice conditions warning
CRYSTAL FALLS— Iron County Sheriff Mark Valesano has issued a warning on the changing area ice conditions. Due to the arrival of a long-awaited spring warm-up, the ice conditions on the lakes and rivers of Iron County will soon begin to deteriorate and have the potential to be dangerous. He warns that all users of the ice exercise due caution when venturing out on snowmobiles, ATVs or on foot. Ice should be 5 inches thick to hold the weight of a person and 8 inches thick for snowmobiles and off-road vehicles.
With temperatures fluctuating wildly, ice that was safe yesterday may be dangerous today. This is especially true in rivers and streams where a current is present. Valesano asks everyone to please use caution while out recreating, and if unsure about the condition of the ice, it’s best to stay off of it and make safety your priority.
