Force Forestry funding available
CRYSTAL FALLS—The 2018 spring round of funding for the for the John E. Force Forestry Education Fund is now available.
Applications are due on Feb. 15, 2018, according to directions on the application. The committee will announce awards by March 1, 2018. The application is attached and can be obtained at www.sustainableinc.org or by contacting the Institute at 877.284.3882.
The fund, formed in memory of John E. Force who was very interested and active in educating young people about forestry, wood products, and the natural resources heitage of this beautiful part of the country, is devoted to supporting forestry and other natural resource education projects in the Crystal Falls and Florence, Wis. areas.
It has a close relationship with the Forest Park and Florence public school systems, as well as the Florence Natural Resources Center.
The fund specifically supports projects that educate young people about forestry and career opportunities in that field.
The fund is administered by the Sustainable Resources Institute, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the Great Lakes region.
The first round of funding was awarded in the fall of 2015. To date, more than $11,000 has been awarded to support the education of more than 2,000 students.
Projects funded in the fall of 2017 will support Florence middle school students in a field trip to the accredited Trees for Tomorrow School of Science in Eagle River, Wis., where students attend classes such as tree identification, wilderness survival skills, forest management, logging and paper making, and a project by Florence High School students to develop educational signs for an interpretative trail at the Florence County Natural Resource Center.
Also funded was a project to enhance the Florence County school forest habitat through tree and wildlife shrub planting, and a project to enhance the ecological health of the Forest Park school grounds through the removal of invasive species.
