A familiar sight in our area

The bald eagle is a familiar sight throughout the Iron County area and the Ottawa National Forest. Late September is mating season for the bird of prey. Bald eagles mature when they are 4 to 5 years old. They can weigh up to 16 pounds (average 12) and have a wing spans of 6 1/2 to 8 feet. Adult females are much larger than males, averaging 34 to 43 inches in length, while males are only 30 to 35 inches in length. (Bonnie Baldwin photo)
