Relay bikers honor, remember

On June 12, several Relay for Life supporters and cancer survivors embarked on a 35-mile bike ride from Iron River to Crystal Falls and back to honor, support and remember those who’ve been diagnosed with the disease. The bicyclists started at the Klint Safford RV Park in Iron River at 7:30 a.m. and rode to Crystal Falls along U.S. 2 before returning via CR-424 and the Apple Blossom Trail. The ride was meant as a symbolic journey to honor those who have had, will have or are currently battling cancer. Chris Shamion, a cancer survivor who also lost her husband Jerry to the disease this year, wrote before the event that “the ride is to honor his enthusiastic desire to help raise funds for cancer research. Help us remember all who have struggled and are no longer with us, and to celebrate those who have survived. Together may we keep the ‘flame of hope’ burning!” (photos by Kathy Holm)
