There will be no Memorial Day programs at local cemeteries this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. Nevertheless, area VFW and American Legion organizations placed flags by the graves of veterans in tribute and remembrance. John Brunswick, along with other members of the American Legion Reino Post 21, placed nearly 800 flags at the Stambaugh Cemetery on May 21. Since last Memorial Day, they added 14 more flags to those already being placed as 14 vets had passed away. Brunswick said that Legion members leave the flags in place until June 6, the anniversary of D-Day. This is done in honor of a few vets in the Stambaugh Cemetery who died on that date. Other members of the West Side and East Side veterans associations placed American flags at Evergreen, Hematite, Resthaven, Rosehill, Bates and the Iron River cemeteries.
