Johnson’s work chosen people’s choice winner
CRYSTAL FALLS—The VFW Auxiliary Post No. 2891 has announced that Forest Park senior Taryn Johnson is the People’s Choice winner of the VFW’s 2017-2018 Young American Creative Patriotic Art Winner.
Johnson, who was sponsored by VFW Post No. 2891 and its Auxiliary in Crystal Falls, created her colored pencil 12-by-12 drawing as an independent study.
Twenty pieces of art remained after Anna Hilberg’s first-place work advance to the state competition. The 20 pieces were put on display at Charlie’s Emporium in Crystal Falls. The public voted on the artwork.
Other artwork receiving honorable mention were created by: Lily Wesselin, Bailey Blazier, Hanna Lesniewski, Avery Sommers, Reuben Stoor and Nola McDowell.
In the fall, students are invited to start their new artwork for the competition. Students must be in grades 9-12 and must attend school in the same state as the sponsoring VFW Auxiliary.
Home-schooled students are eligible; foreign-exchange students are not. Students must be a maximum of 18 years of age at the time of local entry.
Each year, more than 3,500 high school students from across the country participate in the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. The contest began in 1979 to recognize up-and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth.
