IC 4-H youth seeking trip assistance
CRYSTAL FALLS—Iron County 4-H youth will be participating in this year’s Exploration Days event sponsored by MSU Extension. Youngsters will travel to East Lansing and spend three days on the MSU campus. During this time, they will attend classes on campus, eat together in the cafeteria, and meet and socialize with other 4-H youth throughout the state.
The trip will run June 17-21.
Since Iron County is an eight-hour drive to campus, program coordinators from Houghton, Gogebic, and Iron counties spend an additional two days to get to campus. This year the youth will be driving to the Chicago area and experiencing a new attraction - the Escape House - and will travel to the Museum of Science and Industry and spend a day visiting the museum.
“Tuesday night the youth arrive at the MSU campus and then the real fun begins,” said Deb Divoky, Iron County 4H program coordinator. “Friday afternoon, the youth travel back, exhausted to Iron County. This experience is priceless and truly a great opportunity for our youth.”
Divoky said the trip will cost each youngster $450 (“This adventure is expensive but well worth it,” she said.)
This year, there will be 16 Iron County 4H youth and five chaperones - Ted and Amy Weeks, Josh Nodurft, Debbie Bendick, and Rebekha Hall.
“They are willing to spend their precious vacation time with our youth because they want our Iron County youth to experience this awesome trip,” Divoky said.
The past several years, Divoky has asked all of the businesses in Iron County to support this trip and said they have been generous throughout the years.
“This year because we now have 16 youth attending, we are asking individuals to donate to help our youth with this expense,” she said. “The youth will be having a fundraiser, selling Seroogy’s chocolates, so please look for this yummy chocolate.”
