KREISCHBERG, Austria—Iron River’s two-time Olympian snowboarder Nick Baumgartner started the new season in impressive fashion by taking the bronze medal at the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships on Jan. 16.
Baumgartner said he was thrilled with the outcome in comments posted on his Facebook page.
“What an awesome day and start to the season. I thought I was going to win when I set the Italian up going into turn five, but when he finished his turn extra-wide I was forced close to the fence causing me to lose control a little bit.
“I regained control on the last straightaway only after cutting in front of and forcing teammate Nate Holland off the course and allowing Canadian rider Kevin Hill to also pass me.
“What a heck of a race. I am super pumped on the outcome and so stoked I rode so well. It’s going to be a awesome year, can’t wait for X games next week.”
Italy’s Luca Matteotti took gold in the event.
The 2015 Winter X Games will be held from Jan. 22-25 in Aspen, Colo.
Baumgartner will race Friday, Jan. 23. The race will be televised live on ESPN3.
