IRON RIVER — National Breast Cancer Awareness Month once again saw the Lady Wykons sporting their pink jerseys and working to raise money to assist members in our community. The annual Wykon fundraiser raised $9785 and included the selling of t-shirts, hair extensions and pumpkins, as well as donations by a number of area businesses.
The Pink Out Committee identified the Iron County Cancer Unit as the recipient of the funds. The Iron County Cancer Unit is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) volunteer organization dedicated to providing care and comfort to local cancer patients and their families through financial assistance and providing health care equipment and products.
When the board of the Iron Area Health Foundation heard the Wykons were sponsoring the event, they voted unanimously to match up to $2500.
Marla Shamion, mother and parent of two girls on the volleyball team and one of the organizers, credited a cadre of school personnel, students and parents for a night which was, “super successful.”
In one of the most emotional moments of the evening, between the junior varsity and varsity matches, every girl on the team walked to center court accompanied by an individual who had been impacted by cancer. Seeing the many members of the community who had been impacted reinforced the importance of doing what we can with what we have to ease the burdens of our neighbors.
