West Iron reups resource officer, social worker
IRON RIVER—Last July, the West Iron County School Board approved an agreement with the Iron County Sheriff’s Office for a school resource officer, in this case retired Michigan State Police officer Doug Weesner.
At its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on June 25, the board voted unanimously to extend the program for another year.
The officer, who was armed, had several duties, including:
--Respond to emergency situations at the school
--Serve as a resource deputy to school personnel in preventing juvenile delinquency
--Cooperate with school administrators in the investigation of criminal law violations that occur on campus
--Work with staff to maintain maximum safety and security at the school
--Communicate with school personnel and parents when the officer observes situations or gains information that will assist parents in promoting the health and general welfare of their children
--Create a positive relationship between law enforcement and students
