IRON RIVER — Sheriff’s Deputy Doug Weesner will no longer serve as school resource officer at West Iron County school, effective Jan. 10, according to Superintendent Kevin Schmutzler.

Weesner would be “taking a different role at the sheriff’s department,” Schmutzler said at the WIC school board meeting held Jan. 16. Weesner had held the position since WIC launched its school resource officer program in 2018.

Weesner’s departure occurs against the backdrop of a pending case brought against a former West Iron student for allegedly assaulting him. Weesner filed his report regarding a Sept. 6 altercation between he and the student, after learning from Iron River Police Chief Curt Harrington that her guardians had inquired about filing a report of their own. The teen faces a felony charge with a maximum sentence of two years confinement and $2,000 in fines. (No charges were brought against Weesner.)

Neither Schmutzler nor Iron County Sheriff Ryan Boehmke responded to multiple inquiries for further details on Weesner’s departure.

“We’re pretty grateful to Doug Weesner and all he’s done here,” Schmutzler said at the board meeting. “His heart was always in the right place.”

Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Allen will serve as WIC school resource officer moving forward.
