Valesano reports on body cameras
CRYSTAL FALLS—At the regular meeting of the Iron County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 16, Iron County Sheriff Mark Valesano reported to the board on the use of VIEVU cameras by his department’s deputies. VIEVU is a body-worn video camera that clips to the front of the officer’s shirt.
“Just some information in light of the issues they’ve had in Ferguson,” said Valesano, referring to the controversy in the St. Louis, Mo., suburb where a black teen was shot and killed by a white policeman.
“The deputies were a little bit hesitant to have a camera on their body all the time, but once we started using them, nobody leaves the office now without them.
Valesano said the camera is helpful to prosecutors and can also protect against liability.
“I think it’s a great tool, and it’s something that is here and will be here forever.”
