Storm closes M-73

Heavy rain on June 11 was too much for M-73 southwest of Iron River. The roadway collapsed at about 9 p.m. that night just south of Baumgartner Road due to the failure of a culvert, and Road Commission officials will keep the highway closed until they can install a replacement culvert—the one that failed was 33 inches high by 49 inches wide—and then resurface the road. The official weather station south of Caspian reported 3.42 inches of rain on June 11, the greatest one-day rain locally since the all-time record of 5.20 inches, recorded on July 15, 1999.
