IRON RIVER—A proposed State Senate bill that would loosen legal limits on several trucking-related laws sure got the attention of the Iron County Road Commission during its Sept. 12 regular meeting.
Superintendent Doug Tomasoski said the possible impacts of Senate Bill 396, introduced by Sen. Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba), were discussed during the Great Lakes Council meeting of the County Road Association of Michigan (CRA) in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 7.
The proposal “is sort of looking at giving the timber industry free rein and no restrictions during seasonal [spring road weight] restrictions,” he told the commission. “That’s sort of the bottom line.
“The disappointing thing,” he continued, “is that Sen. Casperson is the one who is putting it out there.” Casperson’s family is in the log trucking business, and Casperson has owned the business himself for over 10 years.
