IRON RIVER – As part of its ongoing efforts to address blight in the city, the Iron River Police Department will be patrolling “every street in the city” on April 27, according to a press release issued by the agency.
As part of the city’s ‘Fight the Blight’ campaign, IRPD officers will start at 9 a.m. inspecting homes, businesses and properties on foot or via car.

“Officers will knock on your door and explain the blight issue you have on your property, and encourage you to obtain compliance in a timely manner,” Iron River Police Chief Curt Harrington said in the release. Citations may be issued for those who do not comply.
The city’s blight ordinance includes bans on the following:

• The storage of building materials in residential areas without a permit, with “building materials” to include lumber, bricks, cinder blocks, plumbing materials, nails, screws and more.
• The storage of “junk”, aside from domestic refused stored in a matter “not to create a nuisance;” with junk to include vehicle parts, appliances, furniture, household items, broken toys and bicycles, broken lawn furniture, “or other material of any kind, whether or not the same could be put to any reasonable use”
• The existence of “uninhabitable or useless structures” in any area, in which the structure is not useful for any purpose due to fire or wind damage or general deterioration
