Byczek dates set

CRYSTAL FALLS—The trial dates for an Alpha man accused of making a terrorist threat have been set.
Wilson Thompson Byczek, 37, is scheduled to stand trial May 30 and 31 in Iron County Trial Court. Byczek has been charged with threatening to commit an act of terrorism (a 20-year felony) and malicious use of telecommunications services (a six-month misdemeanor) stemming from a phone call he placed to the Iron County Sheriff’s Department on Oct. 12, 2017.
He was also given a habitual offender--fourth offense notice because of past convictions of resisting and obstructing an officer, burglary and escaping criminal arrest, all in Wisconsin.
In testimony at a preliminary examination, Byzcek said the incident in question was a result of a misunderstanding of his using the phrase “#LasVegas” in the phone call with the Iron County Sheriff’s Department. Byczek said he meant the phrase to communicate he was about to take a vacation to Las Vegas. However, law enforcement took it as referring to the mass shooting incident that took place in Las Vegas last October and as a threat to the local community.
A supplemental pretrial conference is set for April 23.
