IRON COUNTY — After two weeks of virtual learning only, both the Forest Park and West Iron County school districts reopened this week.
In a Facebook post addressed to families, the Forest Park Board of Education wrote:
“The Board of Education believes our families should be given the opportunity to make the decision that is best for their family. Therefore ... the board voted in favor of returning to face-to-face learning on Monday, Oct. 12.”
The board said if any family wishes to continue with virtual learning, they may do so.
According to its Facebook page, the Forest Park School District had no students positive for COVID-19 as of Oct. 12.
The West Iron School Board also chose to resume in-person education on Oct. 12.
West Iron County Superintendent Chris Thomson spoke for his board in a released statment to the media.
“We understand there are many perspectives to the decision, but the board and district felt that it was important to get kids back to a school setting for their education.”
Both boards of education chose to reopen in-person learning against the recommendation of the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department, which called for the districts to keep in-person school activities discontinued until Oct. 23.
Both districts resumed their sports practices and schedules as well. Forest Park was set to play North Dickinson on Oct. 9 before the Nordics forfeited the game because of concerns over recent COVID-19 cases in Iron County.
As of press time on Monday, Oct. 12, the Trojans football squad was scheduled to host Stephenson on Friday while the Lady Trojans volleyball team is slated to host Rapid River on Wednesday.
At West Iron, the Wykons football team is scheduled to travel to Gwinn on Friday, while the West Iron volleyball team was slated to host Ishpeming on Tuesday before traveling to Iron Mountain on Thursday and to the West Pac Conference tournament in Houghton on Saturday.
West Iron was scheduled to host a cross-country meet on Monday, but that was cancelled. The Wykons are slated to participate in the West Pac Conference meet at Negaunee on Friday.
