CRYSTAL FALLS — The Crystal Falls City Council will hold a public hearing on March 19 at 5 p.m. to discuss updating an ordinance that regulates ‘noxious weeds’ and the length of residents’ lawns.

Changes to this ordinance would reduce the limit of how tall residential lawns can be by two inches, from the previous limit of 10, for a new limit of eight inches. It would also change the penalties for repeat violations by making the second violation cost $150 plus court costs and the third violation and beyond $250 plus court costs all up from the first violation at $100 plus court costs, as well as change the method by which the city can notify a resident to first class mail, hand deliverance, and/or property posting.

Mayor McCarthy added that the ordinance, “will be available at City Hall for anyone to pick up.”

The hearing will be held at the next monthly meeting of the Crystal Falls City Council which will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at 5 p.m. (The meeting was moved from March 11 to March 19 due to internal scheduling conflicts.)

Also discussed at the February meeting was a public hearing regarding the city’s intent to file an application for federal financial assistance to support a project to improve the water distribution on Wagner/Fairbanks Drive. The project seeks to update water mains, valves and hydrants, and to replace old and deteriorated water lines. The project is expected to be done in 2025 at an estimated cost of $4.1 million.

The following matters were also discussed by the Crystal Falls City Council at its Feb. 12 meeting:

• Paul Foucault was appointed to the Crystal Falls District Community Library.

• A Municipal Employees’ Retirement System Health Care Savings Program Participation Agreement was approved.

• Another payment was made to the companies involved in the wastewater project for a total of $98,068.64.

• Guidelines and Policy for Poverty Exemption were approved by the City Council.

The Crystal Falls City Council meets on the second Monday of the month at 5 p.m. in the City Hall — with the exception of next month’s meeting which is taking place on March 19 at 5 p.m. More information is available at crystalfalls.org.
