MARQUETTE — This GivingTuesday, #give906, coordinated by Grow & Lead: Community and Youth Development, will inspire generosity throughout the Upper Peninsula by sharing the stories of needs from U.P. based nonprofits in the annual #give906 Giving Guide.
GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. GivingTuesday will kick off the generosity season this year by inspiring people to give back on Dec. 1, and throughout the year.
The #give906 campaign was developed in 2018 by a committee of local nonprofits that participate in #GivingTuesday, with the goal of encouraging residents of the U.P. and those who hold the U.P. close to their heart to consider giving to an organization in the 906 area code. In 2019, Upper Peninsula giving exceeded expectations with $1,040,724.67 donated online through 3,199 transactions based in the Upper Peninsula.
By participating in #give906, U.P. nonprofits receive the following:
• Listing in the online Giving Guide and map
• Inclusion in press releases to local TV and newspaper
• Invitation to a private Facebook group for #Give906 organizations
• Social media promotion
U.P. nonprofits having a fundraiser or project for GivingTuesday are encouraged to complete the #give906 registration form at give906.org by Friday, Nov. 20.
Donors and volunteers are encouraged to use #give906 on Tuesday, Dec. 1 to share how they gave locally and view the directory of GivingTuesday projects happening in the U.P. at www.give906.org.
GivingTuesday was launched in 2012 as a simple idea: to create a day that encourages people to do good.
Over the past nine years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
People demonstrate generosity in many ways on GivingTuesday.
Whether it’s helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving to causes we care about, every act of generosity counts.
On May 5, 2020, GivingTuesday hosted a special #GivingTuesdayNow initiative in response to COVID-19 creating a surge in grassroots giving with more than $503 million raised in the U.S. via online donations as well as countless acts of kindness and generosity to support essential workers and communities in need.
“GivingTuesday inspires people all around the world to embrace their power to drive progress around the causes they care about, not just on one day but throughout the year.” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s CEO and co-founder.
