IRON RIVER - The Iron County Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) has awarded a grant to West Iron County School staff members, Alisa Porier and Shelly Poindexter.

MARSP has been awarded grants to both West Iron County and Forest Park school district employees for the past several years. The funds are generated from members through individual donations. With these annual Grants, MARSP continues to support the students and staff of Iron County schools by providing an opportunity to enrich the curriculum and add to the superior educational opportunities for Iron County students.

The West Iron County school staff received applications for the Grant in the fall. After submitting the applications, MARSP members reviewed the requests and have chosen two WIC staff members to receive the Grant.

Mrs. Porier is an Art Teacher at WICHS. The following is a portion of her submission letter.

“Our high school students were introduced to ASA (Association of Student Artists) which is a group of eight school district art departments that enriches and recognizes student talent in the field of visual art s. Students meet several times a year for workshops with local artists and host a juried art show each spring where students can receive admission scholarships with art and design colleges.

One of the benefits of being involved in ASA is seeing what other students are doing in regards to media, subject and techniques. MARSP will help fund some much needed artist quality colored pencils. These pencils would be reserved for high school students that exhibit strong studio work habits. With the addition of these pencils, my students will develop their skill to produce some amazing work.”

Mrs. Poindexter is the WIC district School Success Worker and submitted the following letter.

“This grant would help me to acquire social and emotional learning games, books, worksheets, posters and other resources in order to better teach the life skills our children need to navigate life. As I am the first School Success Worker at Stambaugh Elementary, I am in desperate need of materials to build this program at our school. With social emotional books and materials I could work with our children to develop resiliency, emotional regulation skills, and work on important skills such as honesty, building healthy relationships, taking responsibility for our actions and setting goals. I would also purchase calming corner items to produce safe/calm spaces in our school for our children who have dealt with trauma, or are grieving, or just having a bad day.”
