ESCANABA — The Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress’ Kinship Care Program offers support to grandparents or relatives aged 55 or older caring for grandchildren or a family member’s children.

In the state of Michigan, 194,878 children under the age of 18 live in homes where the householders are grandparents or other relatives, according to the MSU School of Social Work. There are 69,515 grandparents responsible for their grandchildren. Nationally, 4.9 million children live in grandparent-headed households and 1.9 million live in households headed by other relatives.

“UPCAP’s Kinship Program supports families across the Upper Peninsula, offering compassionate support to help with temporary financial assistance, respite care, guardianship, adoption and much more,” said Darren Young, business and community relations manager for UPCAP, in a news release.

Individuals in need of assistance should call 2-1-1 and ask for kinship assistance.
