CRYSTAL FALLS — The Crystal Falls District Community Library is launching two new summer reading programs, each are partially funded by the Library of Michigan Library Services & Technology Public Library Services Grant. The library is also continuing its popular U.P. Notable Books Book Club for another year.
“Lots of exciting things are happening at our library.  Our summer programs are all being planned with safety in mind.  Please consider joining us for one of our great programs, and/or stop in and see what we have new.
For the second time, the library will participate in Summer Scares, which is a virtual book club where club members read three horror books, one for each month of the summer. Then the club meets on Zoom with the author of the book to discuss it with the writer. There are three levels of the book club: middle school, high school, and adult. To see the nine selections picked for 2021, go to joomla.uproc.lib.mi.us/CrystalFalls/ and click on the Summer Scares brochure, or pick a brochure up at the CFDL.  For the middle and high school groups, each book will also come with a make-and-take spooky craft project to complete and share during the meeting.
The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program has story hours, craft projects, and events for six different levels of readers: babies, toddlers, preschoolers, children 5-8, children 9-12, and teens and adults. Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program will run for six weeks starting on June 21 and finishing on July 31. A brochure with the complete information for each reading level can be found at joomla.uproc.lib.mi.us/CrystalFalls/, or those interested can stop and pick one up at the library. Parents will call or email to register their child each week for the story time, that way the library can keep the groups very small and add more if needed to keep everyone safe.
Some of the plans include: playing stack the cats (babies), creating fingerprint farm animals (toddlers), making a felt goldfish bowl pizza box play set (preschoolers), having a stuffed animal sleepover (children 5-8), dissecting owl pellets (children 9-12), and making towel folded fish (teens and adults). Some of the guest speakers will include Dr. Cheryl Matuszewski, a veterinarian from the Apple Blossom Pet Clinic, and Ben Ryan the Prevention Specialist from Communities that Care and his dog Jasper.
U.P. Notable Books Book Club began in January 2021, but it is never too late to join This book club meets virtually on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. to discuss books that have been selected as U.P. Notable Books. These Zoom events are sponsored by the Crystal Falls District Community Library along with the Upper Peninsula Publisher and Authors Association. Upcoming books that will be discussed are: The Women of the Copper Country, with Mary Doria Russell, Kawbawgam:  The Chief, The Legend, The Man with Tyler Tichelaar, I Spy…Isle Royale with Susanna Ausema, and Houghton: Birthplace of Professional Hockey with William J. Sproule.  More information about the U.P. Notable Book Club can be found at joomla.uproc.lib.mi.us/CrystalFalls/.
The CFDL is open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library asks those interested to register early so that it can order enough supplies. Register by calling the library at 875-3344, or by emailing egathu@uproc.lib.mi.us.
