Fine Forgiveness, Puzzle Swap, Book Buffet, Prize Drawings and Bookmark Design Contest
IRON RIVER — The West Iron District Library (WIDL) invites you to celebrate National Library Week, April 8-13. First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries, and a great time to learn about all the resources libraries provide to the public – it’s more than just books.

This year, the WIDL is offering daily activities throughout National Library Week and a finale with prize drawings on Saturday, April 13. All week long, locals can sign up for or renew their library cards, and/or have their fines cleared for overdue books and other media. “Come see what’s new at the library,” encouraged Erika Sauter, Program Coordinator, “and if you haven’t used your library card in a while, come get it updated and clear out old fines!”

National Library Week also will kick off a bookmark design contest running April 13-30. Anyone can pick up a blank bookmark and create a library-, literature- or reading-themed design. Entries should be returned by April 30 and voting will take place the first week of May. The winning design will be reprinted in bulk and distributed to library patrons.

Other offerings during National Library Week will include: a Puzzle Palooza on Thursday, April 11, featuring a wide variety of puzzle games and a puzzle swap; an All-Day Book Buffet on Friday, April 12, where patrons of all ages can sample new genres of books paired with little goodies and a book tasting menu; and the finale on Saturday, April 13 with prize drawings, complimentary coffee and cookies.

“National Library Week is a good time to really get to know your library and librarians,” Sauter said. “The WIDL has so much to offer for our community – from printing and faxing services to free media streaming services, to monthly activities and free crafts, and so much more.”
