IRON RIVER - The Beechwood Historical Society of Iron River, is launching its fundraiser ‘Save Our Steeple’ with the presentation of the program “The Bells of Beechwood” on Friday, March 8,  at 5:30 p.m. at the Beechwood Hall, 178 Beechwood Store Road.

The “Steeple” we are restoring is part of the Bethany Church building currently being restored by the Society. This site is on the National Register of Historic Places. The cornerstone was set in 1912. The original bell is still housed in the bell tower. Restoration efforts, to-date, include the main roof has been replaced and the basement has been reconstructed to house the Archives for the Society. The main floor will eventually house a museum and a portion of this area will include the original church altar, apse and pews, that will be available for weddings and funerals.

The program, presented by Gary Lopez, will include a history of the Bethany bell, the Beechwood School bell, the Benson school bell and the St. Paul Lutheran Church bell. Why were bells important before the “age of technology”? There will also be an “virtual tour” of the restoration work at the Bethany building. Betty Petroski will give an update on the Finnish translation project. Refreshments and food, in addition to one-day raffles, are included in the event.

We are selling 50 tickets only for this event for $15 per person. Please call to reserve a spot at 906-284-1501 or send an email to beechwoodhistoricalsociety@gmail.com.
