Aspirus IR Hospital & Clinics Restarts Diabetes Support Group

IRON RIVER – Aspirus Iron River Hospital & Clinics is restarting a Diabetes Support Group designed to help people manage their diabetes.
Held the third Tuesday of each month starting Feb. 21 from 1 – 2 p.m. at the West Iron County District Library in Iron River. The Diabetes Support Group is designed to provide participants with resources to better manage diabetes.
The Aspirus Iron River Diabetes Support Group is recommended for:
-Adults with type 2 diabetes
-Adults with type 1 diabetes
-Adults with pre-diabetes
-Adults living with someone who has diabetes.
Discussion topics will include helpful care tips, risk reduction, healthy coping and prevention. The meetings are free and open to the public for those with diabetes, their family, friends or those who want to learn more.
“This group should not replace your regular visits with your primary care provider, it will help provide ongoing support and education.”
Diabetes is a serious disease that can often be managed through regular physical activity, healthy eating, weight management and the appropriate use of insulin and other medications to control blood sugars.
If you have these risk factors, you may be at higher risk than others for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, according to the CDC: You are overweight, you are 45 years of age or older, your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes, You are physically active fewer than 3 times per week, You ever gave birth to a baby that weighed more than nine pounds or you ever had diabetes while pregnant.
