The Lady Wykons are 5 and 9 after a rough couple of weeks. The team has put forth an impressive effort, but has come up short in five of its last six games, most recently to Kingsford on Jan. 29 and Negaunee on Jan. 31.
West Iron hit an unanticipated dry spell against the Flivvers of Kingsford (6-8) and were unable to knock down points from beyond the arc. The usual impressive outside shooting was absent and without it the team was not able to get on track.

“Our outside shooting needs to improve (4 of 31). We get open looks, but we need our shooters to knock them down,” stated Wykon Coach Eric Shamion.

While the Wykons have become experts at battling from behind, the slow starts which have plagued them all season were evident again. The Wykons fell behind 16 to 10 after the first quarter and headed into halftime behind 30 to 24.

The third quarter saw West Iron nearly doubled up as the Flivvers scored 15 to the Wykons eight. The Wykons were never able to catch up and the game ended 56 to 43.

“We get behind and use too much energy trying to get back in the game,” stated Shamion.
A positive note for the team saw the Shamion sisters combining for 24 points with Lacey scoring 15 and Danica contributing nine.

Two nights later on Jan. 31, the Wykons were given the unenviable task of taking on Negaunee (14-1). The Miners entered the contest ranked 7th in the State of Michigan and, although the Wykons once again gave it their all, the game was all Negaunee.

With a final score of 73 to 55, the Wykons are looking forward to getting back on track. The team’s favorable schedule should provide an opportunity to put a few more victories in the win column.
