CRYSTAL FALLS—During the week of June 19-23, the Harbour House Museum here will be displaying vintage handwork -- prior 1950.
 This includes crocheted items, quilts, hardanger, embroidery, etc. Museum members have dug in their trunks and cedar chests for many beautiful items.
 Saturday, June 23, will be an open house, with free admission from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., “with tea and crumpets or something,” said organizers.

CASPIAN—Kivajat, a children’s folk dancing group from Hancock, will perform at the Iron County Historical Museum Saturday, June 23, from1:30 to 2:15 p.m.  in honor of Scandinavian Midsummer and Michigan Log Cabin Day.

 
WIC students plant garden at NHS

West Iron County second graders get green thumb technology tips from Caryn Johnson, executive assistant at NorthStar Health Systems, with some coaching encouragement from Denise Maloney, WIC Wellness coordinator, as the students got ready to plant a school garden at the hospital. NHS will be tending garden duties during the summer until fall, when the students will return to reap their harvest. It’s all part of the WIC’s commitment with NHS to develop healthy lifestyle goals for students.
IRON RIVER—West Iron County’s second graders took time off from the classroom to learn a few lessons on gardening as the school year came to a close.
 On May 23, the students began the spring planting process of their school garden, assisted by WIC and NorthStar Health System staff and volunteers, with a variety of vegetables in hopes of a “bountiful fall harvest,” noted Denise Maloney, WIC Wellness coordinator.

CRYSTAL FALLS –The second event of Crystal Theatre’s 2012 “Gem of a Season” features folk singers Jackie Davidson and Gary Brandt.
 The program, “Singing the Good Old Songs Again,” is slated for Sunday, June 17, at 2 p.m.

Taps was played, to honor vets, alonside the new granite memorials at the Iron River Veterans Memorial during the dedication ceremony on Memorial Day.

 
Memorial Day in Crystal Falls

The Ladies Auxiliary placed wreaths at the memorial for soldiers of foreign wars at the Evergreen Cemetery in Crystal Falls. The wreath ceremony followed a volley by the color guard, taps by the Forest Park band’s buglers and a closing prayer by Pastor Laako. The ceremony continued at the 82nd Airborne Division Memorial and at Hematite Cemetery.

 
Stager Depot dedication set at IC Museum

Museum goers will be treated to a look at Iron County’s past during dedication ceremonies of the Stager Depot.  Pictured in the old seating section are, from left, Ross Parcels, museum director, and Jack and Joe Kangas. Thanks to a mountain of elbow grease by “Spud” and Rose LaRock (not pictured), the interior of the old depot is beginning to look like those good ol’ days, when the best travel option was riding the rails.
CASPIAN—The Iron County Historical Museum will kick off the 2012 season with a grand opening family event this Saturday, June 9, featuring the Stager Depot dedication ceremony and a community pancake breakfast.
 Admission for the grand opening will be $8 for adults and $7 for seniors.
 Golden K will be serving breakfast at the museum from 9 until 11 a.m.
 According to Golden K President Jerry Lee Gallagher, an admission ticket will entitle the holder to breakfast.
