Local products highlight of Alpha’s Porter School Faire

ALPHA—The Porter School Faire continues on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Porter School Market Place in Alpha. The doors of the historical school building will open at 9 a.m. for the event. Vendors will also be set up on the lawn area.

Bob Black, Blues Fest coordinator, oversees the youth bluesberry pie eating contest during the Aug. 24 event in Alpha. Spectators cheered as the youths gobbled up the berries and cream. Winning the contest for the second year was Jacob Hill of Bessemer. Olivia Hawkins of Iron Mountain couldn’t keep up with her pie-eating opponent. Hill won a pie plate trophy and a night’s stay at the AmericInn.

Iron County Museum plans miners picnic

CASPIAN—The Iron County Museum will offer free admission for everyone on Sunday, Sept. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Miners Day Family Picnic.

All Veterans’ picnic date set for Sept. 1

CHICAUGON LAKE—The Iron County All Veterans’ recognition picnic will be held on Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Pentoga Park pavilion.
Everyone from various veterans’ organizations and their auxiliaries are invited to attend the event. Veterans visiting the area and their immediate families are also welcome to attend the picnic.

The boys under 5 years, aided by their moms, loved digging through sawdust during the coin scramble at the Iron County Fair Aug. 15 to find their silver treasures: coins. Each age group had a chance to find money that had been buried beneath the piles of sawdust on the opening night of the fair.

High marks went to the Caspian-Gaastra F.D. float during the shirttail parade late on Aug. 1. The theme was “Fire & Ice: Rivals Unite,” and Tom Karvala was in charge of ceremonies that united a L’Anse Purple Hornet and a Baraga Viking with a lot of Lawrence Welk schmaltz floating through the nighttime sky above Baraga’s Superior Avenue.
