Environmental Education Day Camp set at IC Museum PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, July 24, 2012 12:56 PM

CASPIAN—Children are invited to participate in an Environmental Education Day Camp sponsored by and on the grounds of the Iron County Museum on Friday, Aug. 10.
Organizer Maggie Scheffer is naming the event after Aileen Fisher, writer and naturalist, who grew up in Iron River and lived from 1906 to 2002.
Children attending the day camp can expect a day filled with outdoor experiences designed to increase their awareness of our environment, deepen their understanding of healthy ecosystems and develop a sense of respect for the natural world.
Anyone between the ages of 6 to 18 is welcome to sign up for the program.
Workshops for various age groups will be scheduled from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. with a lunch provided.
Funding to help defray program costs is provided through a grant from the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition.
A $5 registration fee will be collected from each participant.
Iron County’s first Environmental Day Camp is geared toward making a difference in young peoples’ sense of responsibility toward their community and their understanding of their relationship to the environment.
The educational goals of this program are to enable children to learn how to think about environmental issues, not what to think; to identify present and potential threats to their natural environment; and to begin approaching solutions as stewards of our natural resources.
Registration is required in order to plan sessions and accommodate lunch arrangements.
Children may be registered by calling the Iron County Museum at (906) 265-2617 or by going to the museum to register in person.
For more information, call Maggie at 265-4081.

Sarah’s Busy Hands Daycare took on a project of love this past Fourth of July. Sarah heard from a former WICHS classmate, Army SFC Joel Olson, that many of the service personnel in his unit stationed in Afghanistan were not receiving care packages from home. Sarah, whose family has generations of military service, found this as a great opportunity to serve.  She posted the need for items at her daycare. The families responded with amazing generosity. The children also made dozens of signs to include in the care packages.  Two packages are being sent. One to answer the call for assistance to SFC Olson, who will distribute the items among members of his unit. Another package is being sent to a U.S. Navy Seal, Chaptan Kosman, Sarah’s cousin and a Phelps, Wis., native also deployed to Afghanistan. Special thanks also to Melissa Passamani, who assisted with this project, and Rachel Hagen, who donated money to cover the postage for these packages.
