Greg Kramer of the Classic Farm Machinery of Iron County hands a sheaf of oats to Miss Iron County Alex Nelson at the Miners Day family picnic held at the Iron County Museum in Caspian Sept. 2, and sponsored by The Miners State Bank as part of its 100-year anniversary. The threshing machine demonstration was among several activities held at the museum during the family picnic. The Ellis Champion thresher, from the 1800s, was donated to the museum by Clarence and Signe Lindahl. It was originally owned by three homesteaders in Beechwood around the turn of the century and was last used in the early 1950s.Check ou the special section in this week's Reporter - "A Day at the Museum".

 
Family Nutrition Fair set for Sept. 20

IRON RIVER—Iron County Great Start Collaborative will host a nutrition fair at Shopko here Thursday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 6 p.m.
 “Come and experience new information on healthy food choices,” said organizers.

 
JPP performance planned at Crystal Theatre Sept. 16

“Little Folk Musicians of Jarvela,” a leading fiddle group of Finland, will be in concert at the Crystal Theatre Sunday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. There are no advance tickets for this performance. Tickets at the door are $12 for adults and $5 for youths 18 and under. (Crystal Theatre photo)
CRYSTAL FALLS—One of the leading fiddle groups of Finland, JPP, will perform at Crystal Theatre Sunday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. 
 JPP, short for Järvelän pikkupelimannit or “Little Folk Musicians of Järvelä,” formed in 1982 in Kaustinen, the fiddling capital of Finland.
 It is home to the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival every July, which draws musicians from around the world.

IRON RIVER—The Iron River Site Council will hold its monthly pancake breakfast Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Iron River Senior Center, 800 Fourth Ave. here, from 8 to 11:30 a.m.
 On the menu will be pancakes, sausage, eggs, strawberries and cream and coffee.
 Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under.

 
Pup is top dog at annual show

CRYSTAL FALLS—Despite stifling heat and windy conditions, over 50 spectators and over 20 dogs turned out for the fifth annual dog show held at Lakeview Bible Church Aug. 25.

 
Iron River Senior Center responds to local survey

IRON RIVER—“First of all, we wish to thank all who responded to the survey,” said Gene Callovi, president of the Iron River Senior Center Site Council. “We will try to address many of your concerns.”
 Facing cuts in its nutrition program, the center began a survey in early June to address this concern and others, and to get input back from those who use or do not use the center’s programs.
 “We do want everyone to know that all are welcome to attend the congregate noon meals,” said Callovi.

 
Wickerham concert slated at Sept. 9 at Crystal Theatre

Dave Wickerham, world renown theater organist, will conclude the 2012 Gem of a Season at the Crystal Theatre in Crystal Falls with a performance Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. Tickets are now available.
CRYSTAL FALLS—The grand finale of Crystal Theatre’s 2012 Gem of a Season features renowned theater organist Dave Wickerham Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m.
 Proclaimed America’s best pipe organist by the American Pipe Organ Guild, Wickerham returns once again to play the vintage Moller pipe organ installed during the theatre’s restoration in the early ‘90s.

 
Genealogy Society sets Sept. 6 meeting

IRON RIVER—On Thursday, Sept. 6, the Iron County Genealogical Society will meet at 1 p.m. at the West Iron District Library in the J. Patrick White Conference Room.
 The group will view a DVD, “Fire and Ice: The Winter War of Finland and Russia.”

 
Miners Day family picnic planned at IC Museum

CASPIAN—Through the sponsorship of the Miners State Bank of Iron River, there will be free admission at the Iron County Museum’s Miners Day family picnic Sunday, Sept. 2.
 Activities begin on the museum grounds at 10 a.m. with an antique threshing machine demonstration.
