David Petrovich (left), observation program leader for the National Weather Service’s Marquette office, presents a Honored Institution Award to Casey Rose, superintendent of the West Iron County Sewer Authority, in recognition of 50 years of providing weather observations to the Weather Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The daily temperature and precipitation readings first came from the old Stambaugh sewage treatment plant, and the instruments were moved to the new plant south of Caspian after it was built.

 
Halloween events set

IRON COUNTY—The Windsor Center announces plans for its second annual Halloween/Family Fun event on Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The West Iron County High School Key club, under the direction of Tamra Wheeler, will be performing “Nightmare on Windsor Street,” which is the theme for this year’s haunted house.
Windsor Street includes a hardware store, doll shop, hospital, pharmacy, cemetery and a car crash scene.

 
First Fruits mission set at First Covenant Church

IRON RIVER—In an effort to assist families in our community, Grace Covenant Church is hosting a service mission called First Fruits.
The purpose of this mission event is actually twofold, said organizers:
--To distribute donated, perishable food items such as: fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, milk, bread, meat, etc. to those in need.

 
Volunteers needed for Crystal Falls Community Thanksgiving dinner

CRYSTAL FALLS—Local volunteers are again planning a community Thanksgiving dinner for residents of Crystal Falls, Alpha and Amasa.
“Last year, the dinner was reinstated, thanks to the very generous donations of area individuals, businesses and churches,” said a spokesperson.

The Iron County Museum began its 50-year celebration Saturday, Oct. 13, with a book-signing and program outlining the formation of the Iron County Historical and Museum Society. Founders Harold and Marcia Bernhardt (top photo), who have co-authored several publications, sign a copy of one book for local Iron River resident Bernice Waite. The program was presented by members of the Iron County Historical and Museum Society (bottom photo)  featuring Bill Leonoff, Melissa Powell, Board President Al Silfven and Museum Director Ross Parcels.

 
Spaghetti dinner set for Christmas Shoe Box project

IRON RIVER—A spaghetti dinner will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, at First Presbyterian Church here to send the “Operation Christmas Child-Shoe Boxes” on their way around the world.
“Since it costs $7 to get it going, we are having the adult and takeouts at $7 and $3.50 for children under 12,” said Marilyn Budzak.

 
Galleria opens Nov. 10

CASPIAN—The theme of the 23rd annual Christmas Tree Galleria at the Iron County Museum is Winter Wonderland.
Opening on Saturday, Nov. 10, the Galleria, featuring about 40 beautifully decorated trees, will continue through Sunday, Nov. 18. Planning for this museum annual fundraiser is well on its way, said organizers.

 
Community Thanksgiving meeting set

IRON RIVER—On Tuesday, Oct. 23, a planning meeting will be held to see if a community Thanksgiving dinner can be held in Iron River.
“As before, we reached out to shut-ins, those who needed help, as their wallets were low, and others who wished to come and have a sit-down dinner with us,” said Marilyn Budzak.

 
Roe Family Singers set for Second Sunday Folk Dance

CRYSTAL FALLS—On Sunday, Oct. 14, Second Sunday Folk Dance kicks off its 28th year by hosting the Roe Family Singers.
The group is described as a “good-time, old-time hillbilly band” from the Mississippi-headwaters community of Kirkwood Hollow, Minn.
The band blends characteristic old-time sound with rock and roll urgency and influence.

 
Christmas Galleria slated at IC Museum

CASPIAN—The annual Christmas Tree Galleria at the Iron County Museum will be held Nov.10-18.
As has been the custom since 2001, the Saturday opening day will include the honoring of eight volunteers nominated from various areas of Iron County.
The Galleria Committee has had its first meeting and is now requesting information for nominations.
