Wykon girls 1st, boys 2nd at D2 regional tourney

The Wykons’ Casey Harrington is first across the finish line, winning the 100-meter dash during the Division 2 regional tournament May 17.

IRON RIVER—A gray, damp day was just fine for West Iron’s track team, as the Wykons had a big day during their Division 2 regional tournament, held at Nelson Field on May 17.
 The girls team rolled to first place with 75 points, well ahead of second place Westwood (41) and third place Ironwood (32). That was no surprise.
 The boys team, however, did raise a few eyebrows with a strong showing and a second place finish with 46 points. Ironwood won with 58, and Westwood was third at 33.

 
Trojans sweep team titles at D3 regional tourney

CRYSTAL FALLS—Forest Park’s boys and girls track teams both finished first at the Division 3 regional tournament held May 17 at Lake Linden.
 As usual, the Trojans will be well represented at the U.P. Finals, which take place June 2 at Kingsford High School. The regional meet decided who would qualify for the U.P. Finals.
 “It was a great meet,” said boys Coach Erich Ziegler. “Everybody stepped up, and we are very proud of them.”
 The boys team finished with 58 team points for first place, while North Dickinson (45) edged Lake Linden (44) for second place. Seven teams took part.
 The Trojans finished first in six events. Alex Takala won two of them—the 400 and 200 sprints—and  the other wins were by Jacob Siler (100), Jake Divine (800) and the 3200 and 1600 relay teams.

 
Miners, Marquette stymie WIC

Austin Waara returns a shot during tennis action at Nelson Field last week. As WIC’s first singles starter, Waara goes head to head with the best player on every opposing team.
IRON RIVER—West Iron’s boys tennis team got a heavy dose of Marquette County foes last week. After it ended, Coach Joe Serbentas was grateful Negaunee and Marquette compete in Division 1—they won’t face the Wykons in the Division 2 U.P. State Finals.

 
Blazin’ Blue 3-on-3 tourney announced

IRON RIVER—Plans have been announced for a one-day 3-on-3 basketball tournament to take place at West Iron County High School on Saturday, June 30.
 The Blazin’ Blue tournament will be played both indoors and outdoors at the high school. In case of rain, the indoor games will be moved to the ice arena building in Caspian.
