CRYSTAL FALLS—In 2013, the annual Wop-Swede softball game lasted 12 grueling innings before the Italians eked out an 13-11 win. It was one of the closest games ever in the storied ethnic rivalry.

CHICAUGON LAKE—Twenty-five teams took part in NorthStar Health System Volunteer Services’ 23rd annual Going for the Green 18-hole golf scramble, held June 20 at George Young Recreational Complex.

Fourth annual Windsor Rodeo Run set July 19

IRON RIVER—The Windsor Center is sponsoring the fourth annual Rodeo Run on Saturday, July 19.
The race begins and ends behind the Windsor Center. The two mile run/walk, the 5K run and the 10K run all start at 8 a.m.

Soccer Association catches World Cup fever

Action is always fast and furious at the soccer fields in Gaastra where teams in the Iron River Soccer Association battle, like in this game last August. The new season will start on July 14, and the teams will follow a World Cup theme this year.

GAASTRA—As apparent to anyone with a television, the World Cup is just about everywhere the last 2½ weeks. The world’s most important and most popular soccer event, which takes place every four years, has been televised in its entirety on ESPN and ABC, with wall-to-wall coverage every day since the tournament started on June 12.
