Unbeaten Wykons back home after 3-0 road trip

HOUGHTON—Beyond halfway of the 2013 football season, West Iron County is chugging along towards the playoffs at full throttle.

Who’s No. 1? FP, ND square off this Friday

CRYSTAL FALLS—All season, Forest Park fans have been waiting for this Friday. All season, North Dickinson fans have, too.
The waiting ends Oct. 4 when the unbeaten Trojans host the unbeaten Nordics at Dick Mettlach Field in a battle for the top spot in U.P. Division 8 and playoff home field advantage.

 
WIC tennis team preps for finals

IRON RIVER— Time is running out on summer … and on West Iron’s girls tennis season. The season ends Wednesday, Oct. 2, when the Wykons take part in the Division 2 U.P. Finals at Westwood High School.

CRYSTAL FALLS—Coach Kim Bjork has a really high standard for her Forest Park girls volleyball team: She wants them to play like those Trojan volleyball teams with all those conference, district and regional titles.

CRYSTAL FALLS—The rout was on early here Sept. 20. Forest Park scored on its first six possessions and forced six turnovers as the Trojans demolished Ontonagon 53-0.

HURLEY—Key games are still to come—the unbeaten Gogebic Miners, for instance—but Forest Park’s football team got a big leg up in the battle for the Great Western Conference title Sept. 13 with a solid 31-14 win over Hurley.

 
WIC’s 4th quarter rally ends Mountaineer hex

IRON RIVER—For most of three quarters Sept. 13, West Iron’s visit to Iron Mountain followed the same tired old script: Going up against a team they had not defeated since (it seems) the last Ice Age, the Wykons were behind 20-3. Same old sad ending?
